"Figuring" it out as I went.

I'm convinced I'm not the only quilter that purchases precuts without a plan.

Case in point: I picked up a charm pack of "Figures" by Zen Chic for Moda at Quilt Festival.

And I would love to know how many start the quilt without an end game.

I did this time.

I made nine-patch blocks with white centers.

Then I stared at them on the floor all lined up in a grid (I like to create obstacle courses for people trying to get in and out of the room... ha.).

And I stared. It just didn't do anything for me.

I kept staring for weeks.

And weeks.

And I found something else to work on. (Lots of other things.)

And then after a while it just smacked me.

Set it around a hexagon in a squares and equilateral triangles layout.

Easier said than done.

I'd never calculated anything like this.

And I've not done much with Y-seams in general.

They are a bit time consuming and little more tedious than lining up the usual points in a quilt, but it was exciting to try something that stretched me a bit.

And the centered "medallion" aspect makes it particularly pleasant to me.

I didn't want the middle to be a "boring piece" with too large a gap in the design and no focal point so I re-engineered a star into it.

The center star actually required me to rip apart two of the nine-patch blocks, but the whole thing required 40 charm squares and some background yardage.

And to further accent the medallion aspect, I did irregularly spaced concentric circles for the quilting.

Pretty sure I traced every circular object in my house... to get it started in the right direction. All of the lines past the first circle of blocks had to be echoed around the inner circle using the markings on the walking foot because I couldn't find any larger circles to trace.

And of course I chose a large scale print for the back like I always do... well, almost always.

No absolutes here.

It finished at about 39" x 39".

Daydream

The only goal for most people in doing anything is to find more time to spend doing things that make them happy. Quilters neeeeeeed more time to quilt. There will never be enough hours in the day or years in a life for most of us fabric addicts. Maybe some people have their addictions under control.
I do not.
I like diet coke.
And fabric.
And apparently books and gardening and volleyball and piano and kids.
Oh and science. ANYTHING nerdy and genetics/physics/chemistry related totally gets me going.

I fully admit it. I'm an addict of MANY things.

But if I could combine enough of them together and multitask my enjoyment I could create the most productive and efficient enjoyment machine for my life. I could sit in a garden drawing molecular models in my quilt designs sipping diet coke watching volleyball on television (no volume) while the children frolic through the plants nibbling berries and licking popsicles to classical music. It'd be awesome. And then maybe I could find time for the mundane cleaning and laundry type activities that seem to fill up entirely too much of my life at present. Hello sippee cups. And trips to the potty (Potty-training twins is a blast... said no one ever.). And endless dishes full of food that wasn't even touched. (No wonder my parents just took us to McDonald's.)

But constantly trying to whittle a little time from each of the necessary activities of life to make a little time for a hobby has kind of turned into a game. For instance, if I can get these dishes done while making dinner, flipping a load of laundry, and helping a kid get their homework done, I can free up at least 30-60 min that night for something else. If I do them sequentially I won't even finish today. One day when the kids are all grown I will probably find myself multitasking my hobbies. And then I'll miss the sippee cups and everything else. :)

So I'm sure a few loads of laundry and dishes have had to sit a few extra hours so that I would even have quilts to share on my blog.

How do you find time for quilting?

This little baby quilt is in Kate Spain's Daydream fabric line for Moda.

I quilted a different texture pattern in each of the continuous negative space sections. Quilting multiple designs in a single quilt is so much more entertaining. I highly recommend you try it. You could get a new addiction!

It could really use a name. I was thinking something along the lines of "party streamers." Any thoughts?

It measures 32" x 36" and is in the shop

Happy go lucky

For me, baby showers = excuse to make cute baby things.

Let be honest here... I don't need more excuses.

Sew, sew, sew... a little Happy Go Lucky fabric and a few stitches later, voila!

And for your sewing pleasure try the little dress found HERE and the moccasins found HERE. Also, grab a charm pack, a fat quarter (binding), and a yard of fabric (borders [2.5" x 36" strips] and backing) to make this quilt in a snap! And you can use the time savings to finish the dress and shoes.

Comma Baby Quilt

Another little baby quilt.

In Comma by Zen Chic for Moda.

I set aside many of the golds and greys in the line to create this concoction.

In the shop.

The half square triangles in this quilt are the left overs from making the shared baby quilt for the twins.

It only got a picture with Parker since he decided to mark his territory during this photo shoot.

Oddly enough (as seems to happen with most things I make) it's now being used by my older boy in place of his quilt that is still under construction.

Partly Cloudy

...with Sunnyside by Kate Spain for Moda.

Sunnyside is set to hit stores next month.
I can't wait to get more of it...
Especially the yardage.

(I got this fabric for doing something that I still need to share about. It seems like there just aren't any spare minutes these days to get to what I want to do... meh. Twins will do that to you.)

Striped Diamonds

See, I had a LOT of fun with that fabric.
Strip heaven.

I made paper pieced diamond strip blocks out of them.

And I used the same fabric for the backing as the giraffe applique quilt.

Look at all those happy strips. :)

It is also in the shop.

Giraffe Love

My brain is stuck in baby mode.
It doesn't matter if it's a boy quilt or a girl quilt... it just ends up being a baby quilt in my head.
I'll have to force myself out of this streak sooner or later...

My mom has an obsession with giraffes and buys all sorts of giraffe baby stuff for my kiddos so I can't wait to show her this one!
Cute little modern stylized giraffes.
Love.

The fabric is from a fat quarter bundle sent to me by Joyce at Jellen's house of fabric for some sewing fun.
And believe me, I've had fun with it!

Applique up close.

Hanging out.

Ready for snuggling!

For the backing and borders I went with an "In the Beginning" dots print.
They remind me of googly eyes.

In the shop.

Blocks

So my cute little niece needed some blocks too.

Some of Kate Spain's Central Park would make even a crying baby happy, right? :)

Scrap Baby Lovey Quilt

Someone (other than me) is having a baby boy... so before I end up "out of commission" I thought it would be a good idea to get a baby gift ready...
Now I'm debating mailing it or snuggling it for a few months until they are done "incubating" out of my typical selfish tendencies.

I'm not entire sure how it happened, but "baby gift" to me now implies something with fabric - preferably designer quilting fabric, of course. ;)
Long gone are the days of quick and easy purchases at the store.
I almost feel guilty buying something cute at Gymboree...
like I short changed them...
It's a funny little predicament because a couple of outfits are a lot cheaper and easier but not near as special, personal, loving, heirloom-y, etc. as a baby quilt.

So a simple scrappy (not pink, purple, or floral) patchwork quilt was in order.

And for babies minkee (minky) makes one heavenly substitute for batting and backing.
I would dare say easy to quilt even.

Hopefully the person this is intended for doesn't ever check this blog and this stays a surprise as I have a few pictures for your viewing today...

Teeny Baby Dresses

My new little niece Kylie was born almost 2 weeks ago now and was only 35 weeks 5 days and weighed in at 5 lbs 14 oz. and 17 inches.

She's soooooo cute! And squishy looking! I'm very jealous that I can't hold her and am travel restricted.

Anyway, I whipped up two "itty bitty baby dresses" for her in a few of the beautiful Liberty Art Fabrics Bloomsbury Collection fabrics.

Free pattern can be found here.
I mean, she is "itty bitty."
But even then they're still too big for her!!

So cute. I need another girl...

So nice.

Sharing that is.
I love getting pictures from people of what they have made with my patterns.
This one was particularly gorgeous and different in a non-Christmas finish so I thought I should share it with you.
The pattern is "Dash Away All" found here.

Feel free to go leave Brea, a new-to-quilting artist, some love in her Etsy shop

Arcadia... Is this my 5th?

Let's see...
There was this one.
And this one.
Oh, and that one too.
Yes, and another over there.
Even some coasters.

I've loved this fabric line for a LONG time.
Fabric line is Arcadia by Sanae for Moda.
I've been hoarding some quarter yard cuts and additional yardage.

LOVE the backing print.

And especially those nested circles.

This one ended up being a large baby or small lap quilt size at 42.5" x 47".
